Governance shake-up set for sports

Sports balls

The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has introduced new governance guidelines that indicate federal government funding may be under threat if sports do not comply.

The guidelines, which were announced by Sport Minister Kate Lundy in April 2012, are designed to ensure best practice across all sports and indicate that independent governance is the preferred model.

"Good governance drives good outcomes. These guidelines will strengthen Australian sport and make it strong and resilient," said Senator Lundy.

The revised guidelines appear to put rugby union in particular under close scrutiny as well as cricket and tennis to some extent.

Following the announcement of the new guidelines, Australian Rugby Union (ARU) said it would conduct a review into its corporate governance, which will include a new, fully independent board.

ADVICE

How your association could benefit from external directors

Elaine Trevaskis, CEO of the Australian Sonographers Association (ASA) discusses how electing an external director has brought unique, specialised knowledge to the board and an outsider's view of the profession.

“There have been many unforeseen benefits of adding external directorships, just one being at our annual national conference where Lars connected with sponsors, exhibitors and VIPs in a way which would not be possible for members of the profession thus gaining a different perspective for the ASA from these key stakeholders.”
